Optional: sketch a coordinate grid on the board. Technology None. Calculators are optional for arithmetic only. Student independence High. Students work alone, then compare with a partner. Copies to make One 2-page worksheet per student Materials Pencils, Worksheet Goal for today: Students will apply translations, reflections, rotations and dilations to points on the coordinate plane using coordinate rules and will identify which transformations preserve size. Before the bell ☐ Copy the worksheet, one per student (2 pages). ☐ Write on the board: Translate = slide. Reflect = flip. Rotate = turn. Dilate = resize. Reflect across the x-axis: (x, −y). Across the y-axis: (−x, y). Rotate 180°: (−x, −y). Rotate 90° clockwise: (y, −x). ☐ Optional: draw a simple x-y grid on the board. Students may sketch on scrap paper, but all answers can be found with the rules. Say this to start Good morning! Today’s math is about transformations, which means sliding, flipping, turning or resizing a shape on a coordinate grid. Each transformation has a rule that changes the x and y numbers. The rules are on the board and the worksheet tells students exactly which one to use. Your job is to keep everyone working. Run of show Minutes What you do What students do 0–5 Take attendance as the school requires. Hand out worksheets face down. Settle in with a pencil. 5–12 Read the board aloud. Then read this example: translate the point (2, 3) with the rule (x + 3, y − 2). Add 3 to x and subtract 2 from y to get (5, 1). Follow along and copy the example. 12–25 Tell students to complete the Triangle table. Each row gives a rule to use on points A, B and C. Apply each rule to the three points and write the new coordinates. 25–38 Tell students to do questions 1–9 (matching and point problems). Match the rules to their names, transform point P and find areas. 38–46 Have students finish question 10, the Error Detective table and question 11. Read the answers aloud from the key. Find the mistakes and check their own work. 46–50 Collect all worksheets and stack them for the teacher. Hand in the worksheet. Early finishers • Pick a point of your own and apply all four transformations to it. Trade with a neighbor to check. • Find where the point (3, −4) lands after reflecting across the x-axis and then across the y-axis. Name a single transformation that does the same. Support and challenge • Support: Allow students to sketch a grid and plot the points. Complete only the first two rows of the table and questions 1–5. • Challenge: Ask students to find the coordinates after rotating the triangle A(1, 1), B(4, 1), C(4, 5) 90° clockwise about the origin (answer: (1, −1), (1, −4), (5, −4)).
