Mathematics Statistics
Box Plots and Histograms from Data
Students find a five-number summary and outliers from raw data, build a histogram from a frequency table, and read box-plot statistics.
THE GOAL
What students will learn
Students will compute a five-number summary and outlier fences, construct a histogram from counts, and interpret box-plot statistics.
BEFORE THE BELL
Get ready
Copy the 2-page worksheet (one per student).

50 minutes (one class period)
Prep
Copy the 2-page worksheet (one per student).
Technology
None. Calculators are optional.
Student
independence
High. Students work alone, then compare answers with a partner.
Copies to make
One 2-page worksheet per student
Materials
Pencils, Worksheet, Rulers (optional)
Goal for today: Students will compute a five-number summary and outlier fences, construct a histogram from counts,
and interpret box-plot statistics.
Before the bell
☐ Copy the worksheet, one per student (2 pages).
☐ Write on the board: Min, Q1, Median, Q3, Max.
☐ Keep the answer key on your desk. You do not need to compute anything yourself.
Say this to start
Good morning! Today you will practice summarizing data with a five-number summary, a histogram and a box plot.
The data are on the worksheet, and the rules are in the box. Work quietly on your own, and then we will check answers
together.

What you do
What students do
0–5
Take attendance. Hand out the worksheet. Write the five
labels on the board.
Settle in and read the data.
5–10
Read this example aloud: for 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 the median is 6,
Q1 is 3, Q3 is 9.
Follow along.
10–22
Students do Part A (questions 1–8). Tell them the data are
already in order.
Find the five-number summary, IQR, fence
and any outlier.
22–35
Students complete the Part B table and draw the histogram
(question 9).
Count students in each interval and draw
the bars.
35–44
Students do Part C (questions 10–12) and Part D (question
13).
Read box plot facts and explain the
median.
44–50
Read answers 1–12 from the key. Students mark their
work. Collect worksheets.
Check answers and hand in the worksheet.
If things go wrong
• If students do not know quartiles, point them to the Part A labels. Q1 is the median of the lower 7 values, Q3
the median of the upper 7.

Page 3
• If a student cannot fit a histogram in the box, tell them to label the axes first and make bars about as wide as
the intervals.
• If the numbers feel unfamiliar, remind them everything is counting and simple subtraction.
• If a student finishes early, use the early finisher list.
Early finishers
• Sketch the box plot for the reading data on the back of the page.
• Make up a data set of 7 numbers with an outlier and find its five-number summary.
Support and challenge
• Support: Students complete questions 1–6 and 10.
• Challenge: Ask students to compute the lower fence and explain why the minimum of 5 is not an outlier.
