Goal for today: Students will judge audience and performer behavior at concerts and explain why each etiquette rule

Before the bell
☐ Copy the worksheet, one per student (2 pages).
☐ Write on the board: ETIQUETTE = polite, shared habits that help everyone enjoy an event.
☐ Keep the answer key on your desk. You do not need any music knowledge.
Say this to start
Today you will think about what makes a good audience member and a good performer. Many concerts have unwritten
rules, and your job is to work out why those rules exist. Read the short guide, judge each situation, and then write your
own advice for a school concert.

If things go wrong
• If students argue about when to clap, tell them the guide explains the usual rule and that jazz and pop
concerts have different habits.
• If a student says the rules are silly, ask them to explain in writing how the rule helps a performer.
• If a student finishes early, use the early finisher list.
• If the room gets noisy, remind students that this is a lesson about being a quiet audience, so practice the
habit.
Early finishers
• Write a polite note thanking a performer after a concert.
• Design a poster (with words) welcoming families to a school concert and listing three simple rules.
Support and challenge
• Support: Let students underline one sentence in the guide that supports each answer in the table.
• Challenge: Compare etiquette at an orchestra concert with etiquette at a sports game. Write two differences
and one similarity.
