gusta to talk about likes.
Before the bell
☐ Copy the worksheet, one per student (2 pages).
☐ Write on the board: me gusta + one thing (me gusta el queso) | me gustan + more than one (me gustan las
fresas) | no me gusta = I do not like.
☐ Keep the answer key on your desk. Every Spanish sentence has an English translation.
Say this to start
Good morning! Today in Spanish we are learning to talk about foods and what we like. The phrase “me gusta” means
“I like.” We use “gusta” for one thing and “gustan” for more than one. You will match foods, fill in blanks, read a small
survey chart and write about your own tastes. There are no wrong tastes, only correct Spanish.

If things go wrong
• If students ask how to pronounce a food word, say you do not speak Spanish and ask a classmate. Many are
close to English or can be sounded out.
• If students ask why it is “gusta” sometimes and “gustan” other times, tell them: one thing = gusta, more than
one thing = gustan. The verb matches the thing that is liked.
• If students ask about foods not on the worksheet, tell them they may only use the foods on the page for now
and may look up others in their notes or textbook.
• If students finish early, use the early finisher list.
Early finishers
• Write four more survey sentences about classmates (use first names only): A ___ le gusta/gustan ___.
• Create your own mini survey chart with three foods and three students. Trade with a partner and write two
questions about it.
• Draw your favorite meal and label each food in Spanish.
Support and challenge
• Support: Students may skip the survey questions and write only two sentences for question 18, copying the
pattern from the board.
• Challenge: Write six sentences using me gusta, me gustan, te gusta and no me gusta, and include a question
and an answer.
