☐ Copy the worksheet, one per student (2 pages).
☐ Write on the board: -ar verbs: drop the -ar, then add: yo -o | tú -as | él/ella -a | nosotros -amos | ellos/ellas -an.
Example: hablar → hablo, hablas, habla, hablamos, hablan.
☐ Keep the answer key on your desk. It has a translation for every sentence.
Say this to start
Good morning! Today in Spanish we are working on verbs that end in -ar, like hablar (to speak) and bailar (to dance).
To use them, you remove the -ar and add an ending that matches who is doing the action. The endings are on the
board, and there is an example in the first chart. Work on your own, and ask a neighbor for help if you get stuck.

If things go wrong
• If students ask why the verb changes, tell them the ending shows who is doing the action, like I, you, he, we
or they.
• If students ask how to pronounce a verb, say you do not speak Spanish and ask a classmate who does.
• If students are stuck on the chart, tell them to copy the hablar row and change only the beginning of the
word.
• If students finish early, use the early finisher list.
Early finishers
• Choose two other -ar verbs from the list and conjugate them on the back of the worksheet.
• Write four original sentences using different subjects and verbs from the list.
• Write a question in Spanish using tú and a verb from the list (for example, ¿Hablas inglés?).
Support and challenge
• Support: Let students complete the chart for cantar and estudiar only, plus questions 1–5 and 9–10.
• Challenge: Write six sentences that use a different verb and a different subject in each.
