Say this to start
Good morning! Today in German you will practice the verbs sein (to be) and haben (to have), plus the pattern for
regular verbs. The forms are on the board. Fill in the table first, then use the forms in sentences. Work on your own and
then check with a partner.

Run of show
Minutes
What you do
What students do
0–5
Take attendance. Hand out the worksheet. Point out the
verb tables on the board.
Take out a pencil and read the board.
5–12
Read the board tables aloud slowly. Ask a few students to
read lines aloud after you. Explain that German has formal
Sie (you, to an adult you do not know) and informal du
(you, to a friend).
Repeat the forms aloud.
12–22
Tell students to complete the conjugation table (Part A)
using the board.
Fill in the missing verb forms.
22–34
Tell students to complete the fill-in sentences (questions
1–8).
Write the correct verb form in each blank.
34–44
Tell students to complete the translations (questions 9–12),
the true/false questions (13–14), and the Error Detective
table. Partners may compare.
Translate into German. Correct wrong
sentences.
44–50
Read answers from the key. Students mark their own work.
Collect worksheets.
Check answers and hand in the worksheet.
If things go wrong
• If students say they have forgotten a form, direct them to the board. The goal is applying the forms, not
memorizing them today.
• If students ask about verbs like essen (isst), tell them those are special forms not covered today.
• If students are confused about du and Sie, tell them du is informal and Sie is formal. The key notes which one
to use.
• If students finish early, direct them to the early finishers list.
Early finishers
• Write the forms of another regular verb you know (for example, lernen, machen or wohnen).
• Write five sentences about yourself and your family using ich bin, ich habe and ich spiele.
Support and challenge
• Support: Students complete Part A and questions 1–6, and translate only questions 9 and 10.
• Challenge: Students write a short paragraph (4 sentences) about themselves using sein, haben and a regular
verb.
