Say this to start
Today is a map day in Spanish. You will follow directions to find places in a little town, learn how to give orders to a
friend, which Spanish calls tú commands, and then write your own directions. The worksheet has a word bank with all
the new words. Everyone starts at the school, and each box on the map is one block.

What students do
0–5
Take attendance. Hand out the worksheet and read the
directions aloud in English.
Look over the map and the word bank.
5–12
Point to the word bank. Say: “Everyone starts at the
Escuela, facing the top of the page. Each box is one block.
‘Dobla a la derecha’ means turn right.” Ask one student to
show a turn right on the map.
Listen and follow along on the map.
12–25
Tell students to complete questions 1–4, tracing each route
with a pencil and writing the place name where they end.
Follow each set of directions on the map.
25–36
Tell students to complete questions 5–10, the tú
commands.
Write the command form of each verb.

If things go wrong
• If students are confused about turns, remind them they always turn from the direction they are facing. After
the first turn they may no longer be facing the top of the page.
• If a student says they do not know a place name, they may use the key words in the word bank, or ask a
neighbor. The key has English meanings.
• If a student finishes early, ask them to check each route a second time by tracing it with a different color,
then use the early finisher list.
• If the room gets noisy, tell students that the map work is silent, and partners may talk during the final check.
Early finishers
• Write directions in Spanish from the Escuela to the Cine. Trade with a neighbor and check each other’s routes.
• Draw your own 3 × 3 map on the back with nine places and write two sets of directions for a partner.
Support and challenge
• Support: Let students work with a partner on items 1–4, and give them only the commands for hablar, comer
and escribir in items 5–7.
• Challenge: Ask students to write directions that use at least three turns and two different command forms,
such as sigue and cruza.
